SOUNDTRACK TO SERENITY…Miles Davis: Musc Inspired by “Miles Davis”-Birth of the Cool” a film by Stanley Nelson

It doesn’t matter whether or not you’ve seen Stanley Nelson’s documentary of Miles Davis to appreciate this album, which is essentially an anthology of everything that made you fall in love with the legendary trumpeter. It includes just about every phase and stage of Davis’ career, made even more fun because every song has a short snippet of commentary by the likes of Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Heath, Carlos Santana, Marcus Miller, Wayne Shorter and Jimmy Cobb. The introductions of the songs give extra perspective, such as George Wein commenting on the importance of Davis’ paradigm shifting use of the Harmon mute, Frances Taylor Davis describing her husband’s fascination with flamenco music regarding “The Pan Piper”, Gil Evans describing his friendship with Miles leading into “New Rumba” and Vincent Bessieres giving background to Davis’ contribution to the soundtrack for the artsy film “Ascension to the Gallows”. There is one previously unreleased tune, “Hail To The Chief” which is a summary of Davis’ career, which Erin Davis describes as “always focusing on the NOW”. A great palate of sounds from the man who gave us modern music.
