John Vanore uses his big toned trumpet and flugelhorn to create some sonic landscapes with Ron Thomas on piano, Rhodes and Yamaha DX-7 for a wide range of musical moods. Except for when Vanore runs the Miles Davis voodoo down on the funky “Origins of Rude”, the atmosphere is impressionistic and lyrical. His flugelhorn is blue as he serenades along with keyboard concepts on “Final Down” and is fluffy on Johnny Mandel’s reflective “A Time For Love”. Vanore’s trumpet is bel canto with echoes on Lionel Richie’s “Lady” and ambient on the gentle “Yesterdays” and soft with soul “Return”. Sound is what wins you over here, and it’s a sound worth hearing.
