MODERN MOODS…Jennifer Bellor: Reflections a Dusk, Peter Van Zandt Lane: New Cartography

Music is always going forward at Innova Records. Here are a couple recent ideas.

Six pieces by composer Jennifer Bellor are interpreted in variety of environs.  A collection of saxophones directed by Chien-Kwan Lin create a rich texture that hovers on “Skylark Lullaby” while dark shadows lurk with a pair of pianos by Olga Shupyatskaya and Futaba Niekawa teamed with percussionists Hannah Weaver and Kyle Peters on the noir “Amethyst.” Rich chimes form lovely impressions with bass and marimba on “Cerulean Twilight” while dramatic strings and harps create a soundtrack of a landscape for “High Resolution.” Evocative musical images.

Peter Van Zandt Lane does the engineering and mixing on this collection of chamber music recordings from 2015-19 by various ensembles. “/ping/” and “Crooked, Angular, Dancelike” from “Chamber Symphony” are  a pair of  Hitchcockian moods strings, woodwinds, a dash of brass and long shadows. Frisky piano by Adrian Childs team with Van Dadt Lane’s bassoon and Emily Koh/s contrabass for “/chatter/” while “Piano Quartet: The Longitude  Problem” includes pizzicato stings by Helen Kim, Catherine Lynn and Brad Ritchie tip toeing on “Ded Reckoning,” with Elizabeth Pridgen’s piano does finger runs over long tones during “New Cartography”.  Effective affects.
