Tenor saxist and composer Joey Berkley leads a post-bop ensemble of Gary Deinstadt/p, Andy Abel/g, Joris Teepe/b and Christ Parker/dr through a hp set of originals plus one. The new wine skins to the 70s soul classic “Killing Me Softly” that has Berkley bouncing over Parker’s dashing sticks. The team shows its funky side on the crisp “Salamo” and some bop chops on “Moving Forward.” Abel gets some space on the shuffling “Dunce Cap” while opens up with a rich aria. Deinstadt’s fingers are warm as he leads the charge on the multi-hued “Goodbye” before he switches to keyboards to create a Sunday Morning passionate duet with his leader as Berkley preaches it on “Hymn.” Optimistic ensemble works.
