Philippe Saisse Trio: The Body and Soul Sessions

Best known for his long time association with guitar fusion giant Al Di Meola, keyboardist Philippe Saisse creates a soulful trio with bassist David Finck and drummer Scooter Warner on this strong dozen selections. The team is a communicative unit, with Saisse knowing when to hold ‘em and fold ‘em, allowing Finck to deliver some thick and hip melodies on his bass on a foot stomping f I take of “Lady Madonna” and sizzling with Warner on “Harley Davidson.” Saisse himself delivers some spacey keyboards on the intro to Steely  Dan’s “Do It Again” before shifting into a soul groove, while the three give a Weather Reportish fusion sound for a sleek read of Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day” and a Headhunting synth pulse for “Comment Te Dire Adieu.” Pretty themes abound on the sweet “If I Ever Lose This Heaven” and a delicate “Fire And Rain.” There’s lots to like on this session that bubbles over with fun ideas and finger snapping beats.
