Nicki Parrott serves as a double treat as she sings and plays bass on this winning mainstream tribute to two of our most famous jazz havens. With the warm tenor of Harry Allen, Gil Golstein’s bohemian accordion, John DiMartino’s swinging piano and Alvin Atkinson’s snappy drums, Parrot goes from Manhatten to the Left Bank with aplomb. She sports her beret as she sings in French with the Goldstein on “La Mer” and shows her gypsy blood on “Under Blue Skies” while she bows and coos on “I Will Wait For You.” Her delivery gives hint of Blossom Dearie on the semi sweet “I Love Paris,” and all through Allen blows in like a fog as on a cozy “Manhattan” and swinging “Broadway.” The team gives a George Benson’d rendition of “On Broadway” and tips the hat to Count Basie on “April In Paris” while Parrott is both chanteuse in voice and bebopper in strings. As warm as a morning baguette and as tasty as Joe’s Pizza.
