Pianist Yoko Miwa leads a hip trio through a collection of originals and standards, showing a sense of tradition and adventure. Her own title track shows strong fingers boogalooing, while showing uptown and upscale style on the stately swingers “Secret Rendezvous” and elegant “Tone Portrait.” She shows bop chops along with Slater on a strong read of Thelonious Monk’s “In Walked Bud” and brushes dark colors that are wide on a lurking read of Charles Mingus’ “Boogie Stop Shuffle.” Most clever is a funky read of Joni Mitchell’s “Conversation” and a pretty in pink medley of The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers/You Never Give Me Your Money.” Oh, Yoko!
