We lost one of New Orleans’ finest last year with the death of Allen Toussaint, but the spirit of his music is well preserved in a big band setting directed by Adonis Rose. While Rose plays the drums and cymbals on most of the pieces, the album has a street band parade feel as on upbeat pieces like the irresistible “Southern Nights.” Dee Dee Bridgewater is in celebratory form on a lively “With You In Mind” and teams well with Phillip Manuel on “With You In Mind.” The percussion is percolating for Gerald French’s voice on “Gert Town” and the massive horn sections add rich flavor to the staccato’d “Java” while shuffling on “Zimple Street.” A take of the ringer “Tequila” is an extra bonus, but no “Mother In Law”? A festive time at the New Orleans Jazz Market. Let’s head out to Café’ Du Monde!
