Richard Ford uses a panoply of basses on this (mostly) solo album of songs and soundscapes. Using a wide range of tones and instruments , he can create rich images and deep shadow’d atmospheres as on “Dusty Theatre” as well as a dreamy pastoral “Palhaco” with melody used with a piccolo bass. He’s rich and melodic without any extra layers on “Westbeth” while with vocalist Michelle Gonzales creates a misty and mystical “Calango Reco.” He shows his fun and funky side with guests on percussion, keys and voice on George Duke’s R&B beauty “Malibu.” Intimate and personal, yet highly approachable.
