John Patitucci: Soul of the Bass

While he’s best known for his whirlwind chops with the likes of Chick Corea, bassist John Patitucci’s own albums are always rich journeys into a sensitive heart. This latest release has him mostly featured in a solo mood, but it’s not a display of abstractions, rather the legendary bassist takes you on a musical trip through his deep faith. Most of the pieces have him on acoustic bass, and these pieces, such as “Seeds of Change,” the title track or “Trust” are melodic moods that glow like the light through a morning stained glass window. On his 6 string electric bass he brings in drummer Nate Smith for a couple funky grooves such as “The Call,” and with vocalists Greisun and Isabella Patitucci the mood gets celestial during the ethereal “Sarab.” His bass bows with passion during the delicate “Mystery of the Soul” while the piccolo electric bass gives a modern Baroque take on Bach’s “Allemande in D Minor.” The closing chamber strings for “Truth” have a Britten modernity, but the overall mood is both timeless and eternally focused. Check this one out for when you want to get into a reflective state of heart and soul.
