Chuck Redd: Groove City

Rivulets of rhythm are dug deeply by Chuck Redd, as he brings his vibes to the fore with John Di Martino/p, Nicki Parrot/b, Lewis Nash/dr and Jerry Weldon/ts. The band mixes up the pulses, ranging from a suave samba with Parrot on the vocals during a sublime “Wave” while Weldon’s thick tenor gets funky on “A Groove For Gail” and into a hip shaker on “Blues In The Shed.” Di Martino’s piano is rich and thoughtful on a sleek “Lonely Woman” and the rhythm team is joyfully kinetic for Weldon’s horn on a bouncy “Evidence.” As for the leader, he glides on “Renewal,” is sublime on “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Cryin’” and gives a tour de force aria with Di Martino on a moonlit “A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing.” No hand is overplayed here, every song makes you asking for more; always a good sign.
