Lovely and modern post bop moods are created by Duncan Eagles, bringing his tenor and soprano saxes to the fore with sublime support by David Preston/g, Matt Robinson/p, Max Luthert/b and Dave Hamblett/dr on a collection of originals. Eagles’ tone is warm, breathy and relaxed, even when dancing with Hamblett and Luthert on the upbeat calypso of “Taxco” and the peppy “Shimmer.” His rich textured sound is thoughtful and contemplative as he glows like a church candle on “Midnight Mass” and gets moody on “Conquistador.” On the sophisticated “Riad” his soprano is sweet and flexible, joyfully dancing over the groove. Robinson and Preston give lots of spacious support, but still get time in the spotlight, never overstaying their welcome but adding colors to “Riad” and Shimmer.” Strong and fresh outing.
