Justing Kauflin uses both piano and keyboards with his band of Chris Smith/b, Corey Fonville/dr and Alan Parker/g with his selection of clever covers as well as his own materials. Kauflin switches between electric and acoustic formats, with the former creating some soul CTI moods with electic guitar on “Pendulum” and the team getting into a hip hop cadence on “Present Day.” On acoustic, he takes a Brad Mehldau intuitive approach on a trio and solo read of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and is creative over Fonville’s busy drums on Derrik Hodge’s “Somethin’/Somethin’” while the team flows well on the lyrical “Coming Home.”Kauflin takes the Sfujan Stevens piece “John My Beloved” and does some clever multitrack work on it for extra texture. This guy has some nice ideas, and he keeps them accessible.
