Jake Mason Trio: The Stranger in the Mirror

B3er Jake Mason delivers a rich and smoky trio album with Danny Fischer/dr and James Sherlock/g that hearkens back to vintage Blue Note sessions with Grant Green and Kenny Burrell. Mason delivers rich and bluesy clouds for Sherlocks linear strings to veer through like a Fiat in traffic during the hip and funky “The Grain Store” and the chunky “Lemon Twist.” Fischer’s high hat is tipped as he team groves on “Butter Melt” and the team goes Wes on the romantic “Smile Awhile” while the team creates dark nimbus clouds on the ballad “People Two and One.” Paul Williamson brings in his bari and tenor sax for some extra texture, bopping along for “Rib Eye” and joyfully R&B-ing it on the sweet “Please Please Please” while closing off the album with a gospel grieved  “Candy Smack.” Finger lickin’ good!
