Rich Halley 3: The Literature

Thick toned tenor saxist Rich Halley strips down to trip format on this latest album with Clyde Reed/b and Carson Halley/dr. The spartan team covers an intriguing collection of songs and influences, ranging from bluesman Jimmy Rodgers to Monk, Miles and Ornette Coleman with a trip to Sun Ra as a rabbit trail. Halley’s palpable sound works well with the hard swing of Ra’s “Kingdom of Not” and the quirky angularity of Thelonious Monk’s “Misterioso.” Reed’s resonant bass gets down and dirty for “High Powered Mama” and the traditional “Motherless Children” while the leader does a clarion call on “Pussy Cat Dues.” Interestingly, the two Coleman pieces seem most at home in this format, with a fun and frantic “Law Years” and a red clay dirt under the nails of “Broad Way Blues.” An album more felt than heard!
