Charlie Sepulveda and the Turnaround: Songs For Nat

No, this album of sizzling Latin jazz doesn’t have trumpeter Charlie Sepulveda giving tribute to Nat Adderley; rather it’s for his lovely wife, so the album cover makes a lot more sense. The Afro Cuban band, which includes Bienvenido Dinzey/p, Norberto Ortiz/ts, Gabriel Rodriguez/b, Francisco/dr and Gadwin Vargas/cong sizzles with excitement with the leader’s compositions, charging like a stampede on the modal “Exit 4” and “Liberty” as Sepulveda sears out his hot solos. The band produces an Old World traditional sound for Dinzey on “Estampas” while the pianist brings out his B3 for a funky “Nat’s Blues” and is gentle on the gracious “Natalia.” Irresistable grooves sizzle on a kinetic “Frenesi” and the team cruises like it’s Saturday Night in Van Nuys on “My Dear One.” Sharp and polished like fins on a ’61 Chevy.
