LADIES AND THEIR VOICES…Ault Sisters: Sisters in Song

Voices are in triplicate form as Ault Sisters Amanda, Alicia and Alanna do solo and harmony with a mix and match team of support including Jane Bunnett/ss, Ted Quinlan/g, Adrean Farrugia/b and Mark Kelso/dr. The arrangements by Dylan Bell, Debbie Flaming and Alicia are quite clever, mixing Andrew Sisters kitsch, Boswell Sisters harmony and modern inflections and song selection. The ladies are coy as they shuffle through material such as “Let’s Get Away” and a peppy “Blue Skies” while jiving like Louis Jordan on “Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby/Wikked Lil Grrls.” Celestial harmonies make “Slow Hand” a delight and street corner soul is quite fun on “Sincerely.” Most intriguing is a bluesy modal take of Bruce Springsteen’s “Fire” while the girls sound like a female clock factory on a frenetic “Tico Tico.” A rich frozen custard of delightful sounds.
