Galen Ayers: Monument

Singer/songwriter Galen Ayers has an interesting pedigree, being the daughter of Soft Machine founder Kevin Ayers while getting a master’s degree in religious psychology and Buddhism (a degree in Buddhism? From Gautama University?). Nevertheless, she teams with producer Paul Simms to reconcile her life without her dad who died two years ago, with a collection of personal observances with a folk and minstrel mindset.

Her voice is a soft soprano, wispy with some synth on “You Choose” and the atmospheric title track. Other times she’s a bit of an indie rocker on “Morning Song” and upbeat on “Duet” while stark and intimate on “Into The Sea” and a bit of a hippy during “U-Turn.” Free spirited throughout, Ayers captures a wanderlust spirit, trying to plant down into something permanent and with a meaningful direction.
