Modern hard bop and post bop sounds are delivered by John Bailey and his team of Stacy Dillard/ss-fl-ts, John Hart/g, Cameron Brown/b and Victor Lewis/dr. Lewis drives the team like a wagon train with his cymbals on cookers like “Stepping Up” and the muscular “Triplicity” while the leader’s bold and bright trumpet is declaratory on “Rhapsody.” Brown’s sleek bass slides in with Hart on the slinky “My Man Louis!” while the two are soft and nocturnal with Brown’s bowed bass and Dillards flute on the sweet “Morro Velho.” The team gets funky on a hip “Blues For Ella” and the nifty samba “Ensaio Geral” has the leader glide like a pelican. Classic and classy.
