Al Basile takes you on a journey through life, alternating homespun stories with spartan accompaniment with a dozen STAX sounding tunes with Duke Robillard/g, Mark Teixeira/dr, Brad Hallen/b, Bruce Bears/key, Doug James/ts and Jeff “Doc” Chanonhouse/tp as Basile himself plays cornet and spins yarns. The songs range from Smoky B3 hummers like”Lefty’s Nine Lessons” to Steve Cropper inspired “All RIght” while Robillard’s guitar provides obligattos and intros to tales like “Useless Good Advice” and “Young and Old.” Most of the songs are wonderfully swampy Memphis belles, with the team boogie-ing on “My J-O-B” and funky chickened “I Forgot How to Care.” Sitting and swamping stories and songs at the local gas station.
