Blues rocker Paul Filipowicz gets street level on this rollicking session with Benny Rickun/harp, Chris Sandoval/dr, Rick Smith-Tony Menzer/b, Tom Sobel/sax, Jack Naus/tp and Jimmy Voegeli/p. He’s got a rough and ready voice, ready to growl out on groovers like “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” while Rickun’s harp wails at the moon on “Howlin’ For My Darling” and “I Found a New Love.” The horns get STAX swampy on “Riding High” and the murky “Brand New Hat” while Filipowicz’s guitar snarls on “Tin Pan Alley” and slides like Ricky Henderson on “Canal Street.” Lots of dirt under the fingernails here.
