Here’s an ambitious project by guitarist/composer Cliff Hines. He’s put together a collection of tunes focusing on the problems and hopeful solutions of a fragmented world. The main band of Hines with Sasha Masakowski/voc, Andrew McGowan/key, Jasen Waver/b and Paul Thibodeaux/dr is augmented by a gaggle of assorted guests that play cello, piccolo flut, trumpet, sax percussion and other assorted and sundry things. The titles tell of issues concerning Dresden and Tehran, while the music itself ranges from electronic loops and ethereal gaelic images in “Brothers” to Fellini-esque fragmentations of episodic sounds on “Lonely Zone.” Some boppish sounds and a playful voice is discerned on “Aethera” while the closing “The Path of Arjuna” is a kaleidoscope of audio images that come at you like opening and closing doors at Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. Percussion from various parts of the world sneak in and out on this eclectic mix that brings up issues of culture and worldwide direction. Pieces of a puzzle, but lacking a box top to tie it all together .
