Here’s a guy that makes you love the sound of the alto sax. Way too often this horn sounds too harsh or raspy on jazz sessions, but Tim Green’s got the intonation and pitch just the way Goldilocks liked her bed: just right. This session with a mix and match team of Allyn Johnson-Orrin Evans/key, Rodney Green-Obed Calvaire/dr, Kris Funn-Josh Ginsberg/b and cameo appearances by various artists emphasizes the gentle and lyrical side of jazz. Oh, there are some assertive moments like the agitated “Time For Liberation” and bopping “Queen of Sheba,” but the emphasis is on reflective moments. The opening “Psalm 1” is spacious and dreamy, while “Lost Souls” has Troy Stuart’s cello melding together with Green’s golden horn. Warren Wolf’s vibes add a hint of bohemia to “Don’t Explain” while “Siloam” includes Gilad Hekselman’s guitar to create a mystical and panoramic portrait. Excellent and mature music here.
