Gretchen and the Pickpockets: Falling Rising

Vocalist Gretchen Klempa along with her Pickpocketing brother Mike/b and team of Ryan O’Connell/tp-g, Tom O’Connell/dr, Richie Smith/g and Diego Tunjano/sax bring a mix of jazz and a dash of the Tedeschi Trucks Band on this highly satisfying rootsy session. Gretchen’s voice is filled with Cumberland Gap blues on the bluesy C&W  “Love You Forever” and is sublime with Smith on a coy “Easy on My Heart.” With extra  horns supplied by Mark Taddonio/tb, Conor Powers/tb and Billy Jewell/tp the band gets funky as Gretchen goes defiant on “Let Me Do My Thing.” The rhythm team makes it easy for the singer to strut as on “Time and Time Ago” and lets her snap to the hip riffs on “Far, Far We Go.” Impressive impressions of a night at the Moose Lodge.
