The blues come in various shades. Here are a couple of albums that display the wide and rich palate.
Sultry voiced Samantha Martin hits hard with her ten team band that includes a STAXY horn section. Steve Marriner’s B3 hums like a V8 on a smoky “Will We Ever Learn” and the 60s R&Bis “Gonna Find It” while weaving a stark atmosphere for Martin on a rich “Only So Much.” Curtiss Cahaffey’s guitar riffs just right on a sensuous “Wanna Be Your Lover” while the team struts to his Strat on the upbeat “This Night is Mine.” Martin has pipes enough to exhaust a 59 ‘Vette!”
Almost old enough to vote, guitarist and vocalist Spencer MacKenzie mixes boogying blues and relentless shuffles on this uptempo album. His guitar displays a rich fuzz on the swampy “Next Door Neighbor Blues” and he gets gritty with Miles Evans’ B3 during the chunky “Move on Down the Road” while beating daddy eight to the bar on “Shut the Door.” His picking is clean and pure on the lonely title track, and he gets fun and funky during “Haunt Me.” This guy bleed blue!
