Bassist/vocalist Jeff Denson delivers some fresh sounding original material along with some clever selections on this wide ranging album. He teams with Dayna Stephens/ts-ss-bs-EWI, Kari Ikonen/key and Ronen Itzik/dr for moods that range from soulful jazz to modern post bop. His rich and endearing voice is upbeat on Jeff Buckley’s Grace” and with spartan support by Ikonen is crystalline on Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” The mood gets Tom Waits-quirky as Denison gets vaudevillian on his own “Have We Really Gone This Far” and mixes soft CTI grooves to edgy effects on “Through the Mist.” His bass work is also exemplary, getting personal on Abbey Lincoln’s “Bird Alone” while closing out with a dirge-like title track. A thoughtful mood creator in word and deed.
