Salvo Losappio: Long Story Short

Tenor saxist Salvo Losappio drinks deeply from Lester Young’s well on this satisfyingly swinging album of standards with a couple of  self penned tunes. Sosaapio’s tone is warm and supple, naturally bopping to the hip take of “Shaw Nuff” while easygoing support from Sacha Perry/p, Phil Stewart/dr and Ari Roland/b. Stewart’s cymbal caresses “Boerum Hill” as Losaapio adds some Paul Gonsalves-toned harmonics, while the drummer snaps everyone to attention on “Avalon.” Losappio delivers a bel canto intro to a gorgeous “Sophisticated Lady” and masters the behind the beat feel that is always addictive to pieces like “The End of A Beautiful Friendship.” A vintage voice!
