Pianist/keyboardist Edward Simons teams his band Afinidad (David Binney/as, Scott Colley/b, Brian Blade/dr, Gretchen Parlato/voc, Adam Rogers/g, Rogerier Boccato-Luis Quintero/perc with the Imani Winds ensemble of Valeir Colemnan/fl, Toyin Spellman-Diaz/ob, Monica Ellis/bassoon, Mark Dover/cl and Jeff Scott/fh. The result is a rich collection of colors and textures of expansive horizons. The contrast between Binney’s fierce and dramatic horn, Parlato’s cirrus cloud voice and the soft woodwinds make for wondrous moments as on “Incessant Desires” and on the gently angular “Equanimity” while the elliptical “Triangle” is driven by the rhythm team with added exotic voices. Vibrant percussion teamed with Ms. Parlato and Simon’s piano form a dancing “Rebirth” while she whispers like a breeze on the personal “Chant.” Delicate water colors created by a broad brush.
