Bassist and composer Jay Leonhart shows his uptown singing skills as he teams with pianist Tomoko Ohno for a collection of suave originals. His voice and style hints at Bobby Short, while his lyrics have a cleverness akin to Mose Allison and Dave Frishberg. His understated sardonic wit is in good supply on pieces like “Tulips” and his bass line accompanies rich word pictures on “Curtains.” Ohno’s dark keys give an undercurrent for “Schadenfreude” while her Basie spaciousness blithely swings on “I Got the Blues” and her classical touch glows on “The Middle Ages.” Cozy and thoughtful observations are in abundance as on ”Don’t You Wish” and the hep to be hip “Change My Occupation.” Your mind won’t be on vacation with this one!
