Pianist Christian Pabst shows a second generation reflection of Brad Mehldau on this communicative trio session with Marco Zenini/b and Erik Kooger/dr. His fluidity, style and taste shows he’s imbibed from Mehldau’s waters, and it works well on “Dantes’ Dream” and the cantering “Inner Voice” while Kooger does some wonderful interaction on “North-East, South & West” and the spacious Lartigue.” And while you get dashes of Bill Evans’ harmonics on the dainty “A Promise,” you never feel that Pabst is a copycat; he’s just absorbed is predecessors and amalgamated various tones into his own voice, as the nocturnal “Lartigue” is a fresh and unique voice at the ivories. Pabst is a blue ribbon here.
