Venerated pianist Satoko Fujii celebrates her 60th year by producing a rare solo album of originals free thinking compositions along with an interpretation of Jimmy Giuffre’s “Moonlight.” Her intuitive touch and approach has hints of Keith Jarrett on this personal mix of improvisation and structure. She shows rich dynamics on the delicate Giuffre piece, whereas her own material such as “Up Down Left Right” goes from minimalism to a fervent chase between right and left hands. A rhapsodic “Spring Storm” includes use of piano strings while ambient affects add atmosphere to the mix of structure and exploration on “Ninepin.” A mature “Inori” includes pleading ivories while the digits ruminate over “Geradeaus.” Each composition is filled with stories and textures.
