Jeff Rupert with Veronica Swift: Let’s Sail Away

Whether or not you’re a vocal fan, here’s an album that is a swinger’s delight. Veronica Swift has a rich, confident and wide ranging voice, and teams it up like Jordan & Pippin with the Getz-sounding tenor of Jeff Rupert on this collection of standards and originals. Swift carries a hint of O’Day’s clarity and timing and Vaughan’s swooping drama on pieces like the joyful “Pennies From Heaven” while letting sparks fly with Rupert on “Ginza Samba.” The team of Richard Dexler/p, Mary Morell/dr and Charlie Silva/b gallop like stallions on the bopping samba title track, while they pop the clutch for Swift’s scat on the fun filled “Pernod.” Morell adds deft brushes to a slinky “Dream a Little Dream of Me” whle Drexler’s delicate ivories caress Ms> Swift on “Home Blues.” Extra horns from Dan Miller/tp, Christian Herrera/tb and Saul Dautch/bs join in for a stretched out opus take of “Rhapsody In Blue,” giving a hint of the relaxed feel of a concert. When are they hitting LA?!?
