Muscular post-bop tenor saxist leads a simpatico team of Phil Grenadier/tp, Carl Winther/p, Johnny AMan/b and Anders Mogensen/dr through a mix of originals by himself and Winther. Trumpeter Grenadier bookends the album with four of the eight tunes, creating a hip front line on the bopping “Pleides” and the prismatic “Darf” while Mogensen supplies a deft cymbal on the deft “Separated” and the shadowy “Gog Star.” Winther is crisp on “Vertigo” while the leader demonstrates his allegiance to John Coltrane on the subtoned “Darkness” and kinetic “Repore-Pa-Int.” Bergonzi’s tone is palpable and mixes deep grooves with clever forays into the Netherlands, mixing swing with modern directions.Savant Records
