Marc Copland: Nightfall

Pianist Marc Copland has been John Abercrombie’s sideman for some time, and with this album he steps out into the limelight. The late guitarist’s hand is still felt, as Copland interprets a couple Abercrombie pieces, two lovingly lyrical tunes “Another Ralph’s” and “Greenstreet.” The overall mood of the album romantic reflection, and Copland handles the atmosphere elegantly. He understatedly swings on pastoral moods like “Jade Visions” and “Song For A Friend,” and Gary Peacock’s “Vignette” is filled with subtle ripples of warmth. Copland’s own pieces, “String Thing” and the title track, both include rich and reflective team work by both hands, subtle pulses and hints of Bill Evans lyricism, with understated elegance. Impressionistic strokes with ivories.
