Chicago based guitarist and composer Dan Bruce puts together an impressive collective of musicians that mix ESP-era post bop with rich grooves.He puts together Russ Johnson/tp, Chris Madsen/ts, Rob Clearfield/p-key, Clark Sommers/b and Jon Deitemyer/dr for snappy pieces such as “Major_Chord” with some pastoral horns lead by Johnson’s warm tone and nudged forward by Deitemyer’s cymbls on “Sofa.” Bruce himself gets into a CTI soul groove “ICE (No. 2” with nice refrains by the horns and the hip title track. Madsen’s tenor is strong and virile on the mellow “Greatest Hit #1” and glides on the easy drive of “Lapse.” Old and familiar sounding fresh.
