Two trumpeters from the Crescent City, Kermit Ruffins and Irvin Mayfield, take you through a variety of sounds that come from the rich delta. With guests including Dr. Michael White/cl, Bill Summers/perc, Jason Marsalis/vibe, the Rebirth Brass Band and more cameos than an Agatha Christie novel, Ruffins and Mayfield narrate and direct you through material like the ragtime piano of “Just Playin’” or the STAX swamp of “Move On Ahead” and even get a bit into the reggae mood on “Beautiful World.” White’s clarinet is like the moss hanging from the trees on “Drop Me Off In New Orleans” and Cyrille Neville’s rich voice is like a mint julep on a number of tunes, particularly with Mayfields piano on the rich tribute “Allen Toussaint.” This is like a stroll through the French Quarter with a cup from the Café Du Monde in your hand.
