This may be the last recording that iconic guitarist Larry Coryell made, and he went out swinging in style. Bassist/cellist Dylan Taylor leads the trio with fellow famed drummer Mike Clark on this highly satisfying mix of originals and a single jazz standard, and the music is served well here.
Coryell mixes up with both electric and acoustic, and gentle and gracious on Taylors’ “Song For Dennis” as well as sleek during his own “Alabama Rhap Corollary.” Taylor and Clark form an impressive rhythm team, getting a hip bop groove with Clark’s cymbal’s leading the way on Hittin’ and Missin’” and forming a steady gallop on the high hat during “ Jem ‘n’ Eye’n.” The leader himself shoots his lowng bow well on the lithe “Jumbo Liar” and develops a rich line on the cover of Bud Powell’s “John’s Abbey.” This album feels like a musical Breakfast of Champions; every mouthful is a delight.
