A lot of polished brass shines brightly on this album by Rebecca Hennessy, who plays trumpet, flugelhorn, peck horn and baritone horn along with Tom Richards/tb, Jay Burr/tb, Tania Gill/p, Don Scott/g and Nico Dan/dr. The team can get New Orleans fun and funky as on “Snag” or can turn on a dime and do a mix of klezmer and Latin during a Mingusy “Kings County Sheriff.” Burr’s tuba ambles like Gary Cooper in a Western on “Lagoon” and gets into a hip groove for some joyful ‘bone growling on “Two Calls.” Hennessy herself has a sweet tone to her horn as on “Birds For Free” and the medieval mooded “Horn Lake.” The team is light on its feet, making this easy on the ears.
