Clear toned trumpeter Cuong Vu teams with guitarist Bill Frisell as a member of his 4tet to give tribute to the music of composer/arranger Michael Gibbs. The feel of the album is relaxed and patient, and while Vu is usually associated with left of center freedom, there are definite deep pockets to enjoy on these five selections.
Loose impressions and intros lead to an edgy groove that bops fairly well on the title track, while drummer Ted Poor snaps everyone to attention on the crisp high hat during “Blue Comedy.” Frisell’s tone can get country bluesy with some folkish drawl while Vu delivers mouthpiece effects before Poor and bassist Luke Bergman create a slow volcanic flow that leads to a rich climax during “And on the Third Day” while there is a spaciousness with Vu’s autumnal horn and Frisell’s plaintive strums on “Feelings and Things.” The easy pace, gradual increase of heat and judicious use of swing works very well on this symbiotic meeting of creative forces.
