Gerald Clayton: Tributary Tales

Quietly and slowly, pianist Gerald Clayton is growing an impressive catalogue in a variety of settings. Stepping outside the trio format, Clayton here teams up with Joe Sanders/b, Justin Brown and a horn section boasting of Logan Richardson/as, Ben Wendel/ts-bs and Dayna Stephens for a mixture of playful small band pieces mixed with clever interludes. The grooves get urgent and dramatic on the hectic and exciting “Unforeseen” while the leader gets creative on the undulating “Patience Patients” and hip hoppy “Dimensions” Interwove” with deep poetry by Aja Monet & Carl Hancock. The team shows some gospel chops on the playful “Soul Stomp” and the team gets herky jerky on the Monkish “Wakeful.” Luscious moods float for spoken poetry on “ Lovers Reverie” while Sachal Vasandani’s wordless vocals team up with extra percussion for a highly hip and pulsating “Squinted.” Lots of great ideas that stick to the walls when thrown around on this one.
