Patrice Williamson & Jon Wheatley: Comes Love

Vocalist Patrice Williamson and guitarist Jon Wheatley deliver an impressive tribute to the 70s duets between Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass. Those vintage sessions captured The First Lady of Song towards the end of her career in which her range was not quite what it had been. Ms. Williams has a stronger and more flexible delivery here, making the session more of an inspiration than an imitation.

Williamson has a joyful bounce to her swing on “Why Don’t you Do Right” and “Don’t Be That Way” and has a rich lilt on the introduction to “Lush Life.” Wheatley’s guitar musings is reflective on “Tis Autumn” and “Take Love Easy.” The rapport between the two is friendly and playful, highlighted on “You Turned the Tables On Me” and the swinging “One Note Samba.” A strong tip of the hat.
