Adam Rudolph’s Moving Pictures: Glare of the Tiger

Fusion grooves a la early Weather Report and Bitches Brew era Miles Davis make up this intriguing album. The team of Adam Rudolph/perc, Alex Marcelo/key, Damon Banks/eb, Graham Haynes/ct-fh, Hamid Drake/dr, James Hurt/key-perc, Kenny Wessel/g, Ralph M. Jones/w-winds create songs and interludes ranging from 22 seconds to just under fourteen minutes. Of the Interludes, some horn flute and moods create misty atmospheres. The longer pieces are funky jams, with a hip bass line on the title track serving as a foundation for some nice work by Wessell and Jones, “Wonderings” using keyboards, drums and bass for a somber undercurrent for flute and horn, and Drake supplying a hip backbeat as Jones growls on his tenor on “Ciresque.” The pulses keep moving like Old Man River, and the soloists make rich use of them. Tail Spinning, indeed!
