Rich Halley does a series of fun and wild duets with drummer Carson Halley during 10 musical wrestling matches on this release. On tenor, he’s got a thick Sonny Rollins-styled tone, with deep breaths on “Flat Plane of the Sky” and rich subtones on the softer “Snake Eyes.” The two bop with delight on “The Stroll” and clash like the Titans on the earthy “Progenitor.” On flute, images of Monument Valley are spurred on “The Old Ways” with rich drum support creating flickers of light. A fun drum solo hits hard on “Notes from the World Lands” and the team gets frenetic and free as there are more cymbals than Ralph Ellison. A fun jaunt with flexing biceps and buccinators.
