Once upon a time there was a category of music termed “Modern Contemporary Music” which was more sophisticated than rock and soul, but not as self-indulgent as a lot of modern jazz. Keyboardist Ray Lyon taps into that root along with masters Jimmy Haslip/b and Bill Berg/dr for some swinging tunes with biblical themes. Don’t let that thought scare you, as the prophets and apostles knew a bit about “soul” music. Berg makes the cymbal simmer on a read of “Solar” while Haslip makes his bass resonate with Lyon’s keyboards on the lovely “Don’t Let Me Fall” and the cheerful title track. Hints of vintage Weather Report have the trio digging into a deep groove on the spacey “Ezekiel’s Wheels” while the more acoustic “/4 Odd Dance” and reflective solo “In the Day of Small Things” give the leader to show his deft touch of melody and lyricism. Vintage soul jazz pieces like “So Be It,” or the funky latin “When Weak is Strong” works well with the gospel flavored “Don’t Let Me Fall.” His guy makes jazz fans able to tap their toes again.
