Tubby Hayes was one of the few real important jazz artists to come out of England in the post-war years. He played tenor sax and flute, giving hints of both Zoot Sims & Hank Mobley on the former and James Moody on the latter. This album catches him at one of his last concert performances, at the Top Alex, Southen-On-Sea during march of 1973. He’s teamed with Mike Pyne/p, Ron Mathewson/b and Spike Wells/dr and together they sound like they were birthed at the hip as on the feisty and telepathic ending of “Invitation.” Hayes’ flute is gorgeous on the waltzing “Trenton Place’ and the read of the bop classic “Seven Steps To Heaven” is delivered in a rich pace. The only caveat here is the recording quality which gives the album a “bootleg” sound. If you get past that, you’ll have lots to enjoy here.
