Here’s a band that gives evidence for the importance of a good gene pool. Daughters of two jazz icons, cellist Nioka Workman (from Reggie) and pianist Mala Waldron (from Mal)team up with violinist Marlene Rice, bassist Melissa Slocum and drummer Karina Colis for eight fun and swinging originals. The ladies sing with rich delight, with some wordless vocals on the latin and upbeat “Ellie” and the swinging “Shine.” The team digs deep and literally shows pluck on the bouncy “T’aincy Blues” and the strings bow with beauty on the velvety “Castle In The Sky.” Slocum is rich and melancholy with her bass oN “Fantasy” and the team skips with delight on “Miss Lady.” This one’s a treat!
