Left of center ideas abound which mix modern classical harmonies with jazzy solos on this collection of originals by Nicole Mitchell/fl, Marty Ehrlich/cl-bcl, David Morales Boroff/v, Michael Dessen/tb, Joshua White/p, Jim Black/dr-perc and Mark Dresser/b. Dresser’s bass keeps the pulse going forward on the 3rd Stream sounding “Hobby Lobby Horse” and the orchestral “Will Well” which includes a fitting tribute to Roswell Rudd with a poignant plunger muted solo by Dessen. The team see saws back and forth and the horns sign with strings on the rumbling title track, while the reeds get bluesy on “Trumpinputistoopin.” Boroff’s strings add an Eastern European feel to “I Can Smell You Something,” Ehrlich’s bass clarinet squeals on the up and down “Newtown Char” and the closing “Two Handfuls of Peace” mixes soft pastels delivered by the watercolors of Mitchell’s flute and Ehrlich’s warm clarinet. Modern musings and left leanings.
