Gerald Albright: G

There was recently an article on what the three major reasons jazz isn’t as popular as it used to be. One of them was the inability to dance to most of the material. Isn’t that why the Swing Era craze took off? When will we ever learn?

You don’t have to worry about sitting still with Gerald Albright’s music. He plays alto sax and a thumb snapping bass to keep your toes moving on the dance floor on this album. The key rhythm team of JJ Williams/dr, Chris Davis/key and Rick Watford/g sounds weaned on Fabulous Flames, with Albright supplying just about everything else that blows, thumps, picks and snaps. He plays alto, tenor and bari on the upbeat pieces like “Taking Control” and is funky as all get out on “ Frankie B.” The soul classic “Lovely Day” includes Michael McDonald’s vocals, and snaps like snow  peas while Albright shows  his softer side on “I Miss You.” He even gives a tap of the cap to some rap vocals by Doug E Fresh on the funky ” G and Doug E” and has the team race to the finish line on the urgent “Closure.” This is music that makes you want to keep listening, as you don’t want that smile to go away.
