Vocalist Tami Neilson has a rich Patsy Cline-influenced delivery, and she uses it in a variety of dark settings with Dave Khan/g-str, Ben Woolley/b, Joe McCallum/dr and Delaney Davidson/g. The feel is mid 50s Santo and Johnny mood as on “If Love Were Enough” or the stalking “Don’t Be Afraid,” while they also can get a bit rockabilly during the two stepping “Laugh Laugh Laugh” and the Memphis soul of “Bury My Body.” Neilson is riveting throughout, with her heart on her sleeve during “Lonely” and a vintage balladeer on “Only Tears,” and the band always adds a dash of punk edginess to every 45 rpm in the jukebox. Intriguing shadows, but nothing to be afraid of.
