Copenhagen’s Jazzhus Montmarte is a regular stop for lots of jazz artists. Here are a couple recent gigs that had some good sounds recorded for posterity.
Tomas Franck plays his tenor sax along with Carsten Dahl/p, Daniel Franck/b and Rodney Green/dr with a leaning towards mid to late John Coltrane in mind. His tone is thick and rich on the swinging “I Hear A Rhapsody” and gets dark and modal along with Dahl’s Tyner-infested chords on “Late Night Waltz.” The team gets nimble thanks to Green’s crisp drumming on “Blues In The Basement” after Franck digs deep with a warm and rich “I Can’t Get Started.” A reward for fans of Coltrane’s classic quartet.
Vocalist Kenny Washington has a gospel-tinged tenor delivery, and uses it well with Jacob Christoffersen/p, Jesper Bodilsen/b and Zoltan Csorsz/dr on this collection of standards. He is absolutely serene on a sublime “Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans” and is conversational over Christoffersen’s oblique chords during a soft “I Got It Band and That Ain’t Good.” He can also take you to the delta as he digs deep with bass and drums for a low laying and rich “Sitting On The Dock of the Bay” and testifies on the title track. He’s got it in his bones!
